Jajarkot Earthquake Respose
On November 3, 2023, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Jajarkort District, Nepal, resulting in significant damage to the region. The tremors were felt in various parts of the country and in neighboring India. The impact of the earthquake has been especially severe in the Karnali, Sudurpaschim, and Lumbini provinces, with Jajarkot and Rukum West districts being most affected.
In response to this crisis, CARE Nepal, leveraging its existing project in the Jajarkot District and partnering with the Humanitarian Partnership Platform (HPP) secretariat, has been actively coordinating efforts with local partners, government authorities, and various INGOs. CARE Nepal distributed essential immediate relief supplies to assist the most vulnerable, with a specific focus on women, girls, and people with disabilities. These supplies include inclusive shelter kits, hygiene kits, dignity kits, as well as health and nutritional provisions, ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook foods, and kitchen utensils.
Anticipating the sustained, long-term support required by the affected population, CARE Nepal is actively developing plans and strategies for early recovery and reconstruction efforts. These plans encompass critical areas such as the reconstruction and retrofitting of houses and public facilities, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, food, agriculture, livelihood, protection, and sexual reproductive health services, assistance in psychosocial counseling to cope with trauma, necessitating the generation of financial resources to aid the communities’ recovery.
